Kuril Lake is a freshwater lake that was formed 8000 years ago in the hollow of a destroyed volcano. Volcano Ilyinsky rises above the lake, and there are several groups of hot springs along the banks.

Kuril Lake is the largest spawning ground for sockeye salmon in Eurasia, 2–5 million species of salmon spawn there annually. And such an abundance of fish attracts bears — by the end of summer, more than 200 bears fish in the lake basin.

Bears on the lake got used to people long ago and do not pay attention to tourists, as they are too busy fishing. Therefore, you can watch them from a distance of several meters.

Besides visiting the Kuril Lake, we will relax at the hot springs and visit the caldera of the Ksudach volcano — a picturesque volcanic massif with several large lakes.

Tour program

Day 1

Tour of the Kuril Lake
Bathing in hot springs

At 9 in the morning we get from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the heliport, from where we fly to the Kuril Lake on a Mi-8 helicopter.

We won’t waste time and will start the excurcion right upon arrival. We’ll watch bears engaged in fishing, have a boat ride on the lake, and approach bird rookeries on a boat.

Don’t forget to take cameras: pictures of formidable bears and mischievous cubs will become a nice addition to your photo collection.

After the excursion we’ll be accommodated in tents or lodges at the cordons Istok (River Source) or Travyanoy (Grassy). There we’ll have lunch, bathe in hot springs, and relax in the reserved corner of Kamchatka.

Later we’ll have dinner and spend the night in tents or lodges.

Day 2

Tour of the fish counting station
Ksudach Volcano and Khodutka Hot Springs

After breakfast, we go on a tour of the KamchatNIRO (Kamchatka Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography) station. Here ichthyologists keep records of fish and study the unique ecosystem of the lake. From the station you can watch how herds of salmon up up the Ozernaya River and enter the Kuril Lake. The spectacle is impressive: there are so many fish that they turn into a living river themselves.

After the tour we’ll have lunch, say goodbye to the bears and the lake, and fly to Ksudach Volcano. There we’ll have a short tour of the caldera and a tour of the hot beach of Klyuchevoe Lake.

At the end of the program — dinner, relax at the Khodutkinskiye hot springs and return to the heliport. We will return to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at 7 p.m.
