The Koryaksky is one of so called “home volcanoes” which are visible from almost any part of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This active volcano is situated just 35 km away from the city. The height is 3456 m, slopes are steep, the summit is covered with ice and snow, and slightly below it there is continuous fumarolic activity. The last eruption was in October, 2008.

Hundreds of tourists and locals climb up the neighbouring volcano Avachinsky every year. However we offer more difficult, but also more exciting route — Climbing up Volcano Koryaksky with overnight stay at the height of 2000 m.

Participants are required good level of physical training, the ability to use an ice-axe and safety ropes, and to climb in crampons on complex snow and ice surface.

Tour program

Day 1

Climb to an altitude of 2000 meters

We meet at the appointed place, get acquainted with the group, check the gear, and take the journey to the Avachinsky Pass at the altitude of 900 meters. This takes 3–4 hours.

From the pass we climb to the Koryaksky to the altitude of 2000 meters. Besides personal belongings every participants carry on camping equipment and food.

After setting camp we have dinner, rest and power up before tomorrow’s ascent to the summit.

Day 2

Climb to the summit

Woken up early we have breakfast, get safety instructions and start ascending the top of Volcano Koryaksky following the route of grade 1B. Participants are required good level of physical training, the ability to use an ice-axe and safety ropes, and to climb in crampons on complex snow and ice surface.

Having reached the summit we take memorable pictures and, if the weather is clear, enjoy the view. After a short rest we start descending to the altitude of our camp at 2000 meters.

At the camp we have quick snacks, pack camping equipment and continue descending to the altitude of 900 meters where the off-roader is already waiting to get us to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
