80 km south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky there is a complex of volcanic peaks which form almost a perfect ring. The youngest of them is an extinct volcano Barkhatnaya (Velvet) Hill with a height of 870 m. This name was given for its appearance: the slopes of Barkhatnaya Hill are covered with slag — volcanic red-coloured rock which seem to be covered with a velvet blanket from a distance.

Close to Barkhatnaya Hill in a picturesque hollow Lake Topolove lies — a monument of nature, a breathtaking and pleasant place. Its western shore is formed from ancient lava flow.
