Tour program

Day 1

Airport pick-up, hotel check-in
Sightseeing tour around Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

During 3-hour city-tour along the capital of Kamchatskiy krai we’ll visit a number of historical and cultural monuments and the museum of local lore.

A beautiful view of the city, Avacha bay and “the gates” of the Pacific opens from the observation deck on Petrovskaya Hill.

Day 2

Transfer to Kozyrevsk settlement

Early in the morning we set off to Kozyrevsk settlement by the Ural vehicle — a special off-roader of higher cross-country ability, because you need a real off-terrain vehicle to get to remote places of the peninsula.

The way takes the whole day. We have dinner in Milkovo settlement, then an overnight stay at the hotel of Kozyrevsk. Time: 6–7 hours.

Day 3

Transfer to the Tolbachinsky dale

Early in the morning back to road! We’ll wade the Studenaya (Icy Cold) river and spend 4-5 hours driving to the Tolbachinsky dale by the Ural. This dale is an upland with a lot of slag cones near the Plosky Tolbachik.

12 km away from the camp, the Dead Forest is situated. It’s called so because it was covered with a cloud of burning hot ash during The Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption in 1975. The vegetation in this area was burnt, only shells of the strongest trees remained. In the Soviet era there was a base for testing moon research vehicles.

Lunch and rest by the Tolbachinsky dale, in the evening we transfer to the Northern Brake and overnight stop at it’s bottom.

Day 4

Observing slag cones of the Northern Break and lava caves

The Northern Break went along the crack 18 km from the Plosky Tolbachik volcano during The Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption of 1975. 3 slag cones were formed, now they are clearly seen over ground. Their bottoms are spangled with ash, covered with stoned lava and cracks with heated sections. There are also fumaroles, spots where heated steam goes out to the surface of the ground.

Distance of the radial route is 3 km, it takes 2,5 hour. That day we also visit the Dead Forest and the Southern Break. The whole duration is 6–7 hour.

Day 5

Climbing up Plosky Tolbachik

The top of the Plosky Tolbachik is formed by two calderas, situated one in another. A shield volcano and a glacier in one of them shapes a distinctive flat-topped silhouette. Inside of it a younger caldera with the diameter of 1,8 m and 400 m deep is situated.

We’ll have a walk there, watch a new crater, stoned lava flows and consequences of the eruption of 2012–2013. Lunar panorama opens from the top: volcanic desert stretching in the bottom, many slag cones towering over it. There are more than 120 of them.

Day 6

Departure to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

On our way back we drive to hot springs to bathe in thermal water and have a rest after days full of adventures.

We return to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky by evening.

Day 7

Visit to a fish market

We can include few more days into the program: to drive farther to the north of the Plosky Tolbachik volcano to see the Klyuchevskaya group of volcanoes, the highest active volcano of Eurasia and its majestic neighbours.

Or we can stay in the city a little bit longer, take one-day tour to the domestic volcanoes, go rafting, bathe in hot springs or take a helicopter tour to the Valley of Geysers.
